In the last editions of the International IVI Congress, the content of the conference has been carefully chosen to promote the initiatives and projects developed by the IVI Foundation, through actions linked to sustainability and CSR.
To enhance such commitment, we have developed a Sustainability Plan as part of the organisation of the 7th International IVI Congress, with the overall objective of fostering a culture committed and focused on sustainability, which will, little by little, spread beyond every process and action within the company.
In developing the sustainability strategy for the 7th International IVI Congress, where the Sustainability Plan is one of its key pillars, we have considered feedback from the Special Interest Groups formed by: healthcare professionals and members of companies and other entities participating, members of the scientific community and speakers, product and service providers, IVI staff, NGOs and other groups beneficiaries of the actions within the IVI CSR, as well as public administrations and other entities involved with the conference event.
The Sustainability Plan integrates specific deadlines, which are based on six social and environmental aspects:
- Consumption and use of resources and other goods
- Energy management, mobility and climate change
- Inclusiveness, equality and accessibility
- Food and drink consumption
- Waste management
- Efficient water use
Both the Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan of the 7th International IVI Congress will involve the Marketing and Communication Departments, which will focus on three key areas:
- The dissemination of the proposed actions, in order to promote the participation of the special interest groups.
- Communicate the commitment and effort of IVI, including the positive impact that it will have.
- Help expand the culture of sustainability.

Executive Summary
The 7th Edition of the International IVI Congress, which we organise biannually in different cities of Spain since 2005, will be held in 2017, in Bilbao.
The last editions of the International IVI Congress have aimed to give priority to the initiatives and projects developed by the IVI Foundation through a series of action dedicated to sustainability questions and CSR.
Sustainability Action Plan: Objectives
The main objective of the Sustainability Action Plan developed within the 7th International IVI Congress is to promote a culture committed and focused on sustainability, which will, little by little, spread beyond every process and action within the company. Alongside this goal, the Sustainability Strategic Plan for the 7th International IVI Congress includes the following:
- To raise awareness among the staff at IVI about social and environmental sustainability and foster actions toward the reduction of the impact on the environment where such actions affect.
- To facilitate the transition to a sustainable IVI, which will be reflected at the 7th International IVI Congress, our most important event, and consequently promote the message among all attendees.
- To demonstrate the IVI Commitment of Sustainability to the various special interest groups in an approachable and understandable way.
- To ensure that the 7th International IVI Congress is an example of consciousness-raising change about sustainability within the region.
Development of the Sustainability Plan
In developing the sustainability strategy for the 7th International IVI Congress, where the Sustainability Plan is one of its key pillars, we have considered feedback from the Special Interest Groups formed by:
- Attendees: healthcare professionals and members of companies and other entities participating, including the scientific community and the speakers.
- Providers of products and services, ranging from lightning and sound equipment to catering services and even the premises where the 7th International IVI Congress is being held.
- IVI staff attending the conference, including the staff helping with the preparation and development during the months prior to the event.
- NGOs and other groups beneficiaries of the actions within the IVI CSR
- Communication groups and journalists in the field of health.
- Public administrations and other entities involved with the conference event
The Sustainability Plan integrates specific deadlines, which are based on six social and environmental aspects:
1.- Consumption and use of resources and other goods
Under this point, the objectives involve to reduce the consumption of products and incorporate policies for recovering, reusing and recycling them in order to mitigate the impact throughout their life-cycle and reduce the use of toxic and hazardous substances.
One of the most relevant measures is to minimise the number of materials included in the Welcome Pack and prepare them with reused and recycled elements.
2.- Energy management, mobility and climate change:
The following goals have been agreed: to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions by promoting efficient energy use and encouraging the use of renewable energy sources at the conference venue and during the activities performed, promoting non-motorised mobility and involving participants to take part in specific activities in order to compensate gas emissions.
We aim to achieve a Carbon Neutral Conference, free of Greenhouse Gas emissions thanks to the efficient use of energy, the promotion of renewable energy sources and the compensation of gas emissions, working on CO-RESPONSIBILITY from the various special interest groups involved.
3.- Inclusiveness, equality and accessibility
From a social point of view, the objections focus on including social and sustainability policies when selecting the products and services required for the development of the conference. All providers participating shall be included in the Sustainability Plan and they should apply the commitments laid down in the plan. The conference will have no physical barriers and will provide full accessibility for all participants.
The location chosen for the event is the Palacio Palace in Bilbao, which even has accessibility certifications.
4.- Food and drink consumption
Priority has given to the use of local and seasonal products and all participants will be informed about the benefits of using such products in terms of sustainability aspects, raising awareness about food waste and waste generation.
Certain management measures are being prepared with the catering providers in order to considerably reduce the use of water and waste generation.
5.- Waste management
Concerning this paragraph, the objectives involve to prevent waste generation and optimize the amount and type of waste produced, as well as to simplify waste sorting and recycling of hazardous substances.
Some measures have been defined, which require the cooperation of the stands participating in order to implement the actions planned to this end.
6.- Efficient water use
The objectives involve the implementation of water saving measures to reduce water use expected during a conference like the 7th International IVI Congress. Furthermore we aim to use the 7th International IVI Congress to promote the awareness about water saving and establish positive water conservation policies that will improve the availability of safe water, focusing primarily on the provision of safe drinking water to vulnerable communities.
Therefore, the legacy in terms of sustainability as promoted during the 7th International IVI Congress will be closely connected to water saving and a better management of hydric resources.
Dissemination and Communication
Both the Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan of the 7th International IVI Congress will not only involve the IVI CSR Committee but also other departments, such as the Marketing and Communication Departments.
The plan will focus on the dissemination of the proposed actions to promote the participation of the special interest groups, communicate to society the IVI commitment about sustainability, as well as the positive impact that it will have, and help expand the culture of sustainability.
